According to recent reports, there has been a severe lack of professionals in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics; also known as STEM which has led the government to create a plan to increase education in these often under explored areas of study. Thousands of dollars in educational equipment has been donated to learning institutions, with the intention of giving students the time they need at home to be able to continue working towards a degree without having to commute to the traditional college campus. This proves to be especially convenient for working parents that need to earn an income and stay at home with their children while furthering their education. School Funding For Military Service Men And Women
Jun 17th, 2010 by VD

How good has military scholarships become? The Veteran Administration’s Educational Call Center must now turn off its phone lines on Thursdays and Fridays…so it can process all the requests it gets Monday through Wednesday. One day all active soldiers come to a point where it’s time to rejoin civilian life. The good news is there’s the GI Bill, which since 1944 has furthered this adjustment through post-military scholarships. Initially it was to help veterans go to school on campus, but with the rise of the web the GI Bill has little issue with granting military grants to online colleges.

According to the Veterans Administration (VA), there are four basic types of government funding. Any former servicemen looking for a military grant to an online college should keep these in mind. Would-be students should also check the VA for private forms of funding. That said, the four main sources are:

Post-9/11 GI Bill: Is also called the 21st Century GI Bill of Rights. Introduced by Virginia Senator Jim Webb, the law pays veterans’ college expenses to a similar extent the original GI Bill did after World War II. The act includes funding 100% to a veteran who served three years of active duty since September 11, 2001. The act also provides the ability for the veteran to transfer benefits to a spouse or children after serving, or agreeing to serve, ten years.

Montgomery GI Bill: This is the original bill from Roosevelt, with many of its parts still in effect. Among the things it also included were low-interest home loans and even one year’s unemployment after leaving the service.

REAP: Also known as the Reserve Educational Assistance Program, this act is available to all reservists who, after September 11, 2001, complete 90 days or more of active duty service in support of contingency operations. This benefit provides reservists return from active duty with up to 80% of the active duty GI Bill benefits as long as they remain active participants in the reserves.

MGIB-SR: Which stands for Montgomery GI Bill—Selected Reserve, this program is available to members of the Selected Reserve, including the Army National Guard and Air National Guard. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses.

As of January, 2010 the VA reports the following about the Post-9/11 Bill. 164,144 individuals enrolled under the GI Bill, and 130,309 of them received payments. That leaves 34,000 students still waiting, which is down from about 240,000 last August. It pays about 4,500 students per day. It takes, on average, 47 days to process payments from the day the school certifies enrollment. 352,281 people have applied and 292,896 have received one.

The VA also reports that $517 million of GI Bill has been paid out to students and $385 million to schools. An additional 65,282 payments totaling $193 million of scholarships and grants were made to students this fall during the emergency payment period, which sent advance funding to destitute individuals who were still waiting on their first military schools checks.

Become A Nurse WithUniversity Degrees!
Jun 15th, 2010 by VD

Just how many types of nurses are out there? Even professional organizations have a hard time keeping up with the variety of specialties out there. One can say this is due to the extreme growth of the medical profession, but what area one wants to specialize in is an important decision a student must make when signing up to an online college.

At present, there are at least 80 different nursing specialties. All of them define their specialty as a profession focused on assisting individuals, families, and communities in attaining, maintaining, and recovering optimal health and functioning. Another definition of nursing defines it as a science and an art that focuses on promoting quality of life as defined by persons and families, throughout their life experiences from birth to care at the end of life.

Critical to all this is certification. While Registered Nurses (RN’s) don’t need a specific kind of certification, you will need some certification to work in any magnet hospital or decent research facility. Certification means a nurse is an expert in a certain field, ranging from surgical to home health care. It’s another important decision one must consider when entering the field.

The broadest category is the Registered Nurse (RN). They are loosely defined as advocates for the care of the sick and maintenance of their health. From there, an RN’s responsibilities/powers are defined by each U.S. state’s Nurse’s Practicing Act (NPA). It takes a minimum of three years to get an RN diploma. The national average for salary is about $60,000.

Another main category is the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). They are often found working under the supervision of physicians in clinics and hospitals, or in private home health care. Education and training is vocational-based, hospital-based, or college-based, and can vary from 9 month to 3 years in time for certain specialties and require an associate degree in practical nursing. The average salary here is about $34,000.

Below the LPN is the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). The Nursing Assistant still holds a high level of ability, but is unable to often perform some tasks due to issues of liability and legality. They provide the bulk of the grunt work in a hospital setting, depending again on the NPA. The CNA’s salary is the widest ranging, usually starting at just short of $20,000 and into the 30’s.

From there the nursing field diversifies into a number of different specialties, and can range anywhere from social work and cruise nurses to setting up their own offices as nurse practitioners. Salaries and certification can go into the $100,000 range. Naturally, there is some sort of certification that comes with the specialty, but that’s a decision one can make after getting licensed by a state.

Another important factor is a nurse can jump from one category to another, depending on their personal desires and their nursing university. Many health institutes encourage their nurses to be equipped with degree on line, rewarding them by paying their tuition or salary increases upon graduation. No matter what, nursing has become a broad field for anyone willing to put in the effort. There is more information about accredited degree online on the internet.

Distance Learning Education Options
May 20th, 2010 by VD

Distance learning basics

Distance learning is fast becoming the choice for continuing education for working adults. Also refered to as learning online, online adult education, distance learning degrees, long distance learning and e-learning, this type of education allows people to pursue an educational certificate or degree through a “name” university or college right from their living room or bedroom, using only a high speed internet connection.

While distance learning can also talk about various learning courses available via mail, the rising popularity of the internet has pretty much rendered that method of distance learning a thing of the past. With just a desktop, internet connectivity and some desire, you can earn a distance learning education degree.

Why Choose Distance Learning Education

The main benefit of online education is the flexibility you have, particularly if you are already working full time and have a full load, children or similar adult or grown up responsibilities. You can attend class late at night once the children are asleep, or listen to a lecture in the morning before getting ready for your work day. The freedom to work on your own schedule is perhaps the largest benefit of online education, and one of the main reasons to look into going back for that degree you always wanted. Lower fees for online courses also makes many online colleges more affordable than brick and mortar colleges or universites, giving yet another benefit to learning online through distance learning. Finally, the ability to obtain a degree or a certificate, such as the paralegal certificate online, is another option you can consider.

Drawbacks of an Online Education

Getting your degree online can be more difficult than you think, and requires a high level of self motivation. A great deal of people that take online classes say that one of the things they miss is the student to teacher and student to student interaction that typically occurs at brick and mortar schools. Learning online requires that you be disciplined in scheduling your study time, coursework and meeting deadlines. The reading and writing skills required because of the lack of teacher and student interaction can be difficult to overcome for some.

Types of Distance Learning

When dealing with distance learning education, there are two basic types of courses offered. There are synchronous courses and there are asynchronous distance learning institutions. In a nutshell, the difference is that with synchronous learning, you have to attend class. There are set times for instruction, and you will need to be on your computer, attending class at these set times.? Primary communication is in real time, through web cam and instant messaging. Asynchronous courses do not require simultaneous attendance with the professor and other classmates online. Your communication is not in real time, but rather via email or discussion boards. In these asynchronous courses, you truly work at your own pace.

What Institution To Choose

There are many distance learning institutions and schools that offer a number of options to get the degree or certificate you are after. Once you have chosen what your ultimate goal is, you should choose an online institution that fits your learning style best and has a good reputation in your chosen field. You will also want to pick an online institution that is accredited so your degree is accepted by any desired employers as well as other colleges and universities should you want to tansfer to another institution.

With a good education, and a higher education degree, you can tidy up your resume and get hired for your chosen career or desired field of work. Whether you are trying to get your masters, bachelors or doctorate degree, advancing your education really has no downside.

You would need to be keen and focused to acquire higher education if you are considering to enroll in a distance learning Phd program. Unlike usual institutions you will not penalized for not attending classes. If you don’t complete your course work, there is a written and spoken agreement that you will not be issued a refund. Only if the class has not started, then you will be able to get a refund for any classes that you are not able to attend.

Now and again it may be obligatory for a student to attend a general college to attain a quality. Chemistry or biology majors are often required to achieve labs. For these types of courses, it will be compulsory for you to go to enroll in a universal college or university to attend the labs to complete the work. However, electives and some core courses may be taken through a distance learning program.

It would be a good suggestion to check the eligibility criteria, as you may have to enroll in a local university or college to complete the courses that you may be indispensable to acquire labs and one on one work. There is no need to worry as the distance learning program is accredited by the university, and several course credits are transferrable. You should make positive that the credits earned through distance learning Phd program by you will be supported by the accreditation boards for higher learning and education.

Selecting the right distance learning for a Phd will not only save the money, but it will provide a way for you to set you own schedule of learning. The basic concept of distance learning programs is to work when it suits you, because they know that it is grueling to find time to go back to school while working at the same time.

Another good thing about distance learning for a Phd is that they are designed for the professionals and are usually scheduled in the evenings so that people can attend all lecture.

University Gap Years
Mar 30th, 2010 by VD

Many American universities are lukewarm at best when it comes to the gap year idea, which is the extra time that some students take between high school and university. But when it comes to Harvard, the attitude is downright enthusiastic. In fact, back in 2000 the school’s Dean of Admissions, William Fitzsimmons, wrote an article that suggested students may need that year to deal with burn out. And Harvard’s own letters of acceptance to applicants have been explicitly encouraging them for almost 35 years to take the sabbatical year before coming to the school.

Harvard isn’t the only institution to approve of a gap year either. Both Princeton and Yale are content with students taking the break before starting their studies. Yale has always allowed its students to defer entrance for a year, although, unlike either Harvard or Princeton, it hasn’t actively encouraged the practice. The philosophy at Yale is that students can decide for themselves what they want, and the school doesn’t get involved. Princeton, on the other hand, has set up its own program for sending students on service trips. But all three of these ivory towers of learning are onside when it comes to the gap year.

The result of this acceptance is probably surprising to the naysayers, who suspect the gap year will lead to a diminishment in university attendance. By 2000, it was reported that about 20% of Harvard’s students had taken a gap year, if not before their studies began, then sometime during their educational program. And yet 97% of those students graduated. Yale had slightly lower numbers, but that’s probably attributable to the fact that it doesn’t explicitly suggest the gap year to its students.

If Harvard, Princeton and Yale are anything to go by (and when are they not?), then it seems that other schools and the parents of prospective university students can probably relax about the gap year. The Harvard belief that students need time to repair from burn out before launching into post-secondary studies seems to be supported by its own statistics. If students really need a mental break after high school, a chance to spread their wings and replenish themselves, then it is unlikely to harm their academic future as some people wrongly believe.

Pros and Cons of Distance Learning Programs

What is distance learning education?

Online education, or distance learning, is fast becoming more and more mainstream these days. It is also known by names such as online college, internet university, distance learning education, long distance learning and other names, this educational path allows individuals to pursue an educational certificate or degree with a “name” university or college right from their living room or bedroom, using only a high speed internet connection.

With the rise of the internet era and wide spread use of high speed access, distance learning by mail has become outdated, and is really no longer being used. Instead, the online distance learning school has taken control due to the fact that it can offer a better quality and more rewarding learning experience, along with the ability to offer real time learning and a true virtual classroom.. With just a desktop, internet connectivity and the desire to succeed, you can earn a higher education degree without ever setting foot inside a classroom.

Why Choose Distance Learning Education

The main benefit of online education is the flexibility you have, particularly if you are employed full time and have adult commitments, kids or other various grown up responsibilities. You can study at midnight after the house has gone to bed, or view some class material on your lunch break or other breaks in your normally hectic day. The freedom to work on your own schedule is the major benefit of online education, and one of the main reasons to rethink your goal of a higher education. Lower costs for online courses also makes many online colleges more affordable than brick and mortar colleges or universites, adding another benefit to the working individual. Lastly, the ability to obtain a degree or a certificate, such as the paralegal certificate online, is yet another benefit.

What to Watch Out For

Unless you are highly self motivated, online education can be tougher than you think. Some people currently taking online classes complain that they miss the interaction of other students and the professor that can be found on a traditional university or college. Online learning requires that you be disciplined in scheduling your study time, coursework and meeting deadlines. The reading and writing skills required because of the lack of teacher and student interaction can be difficult to overcome for some.

Asynchronous or Synchronous, Which is Better?

When we talk about distance learning schools, there are two distinct types of classes available. There are synchronous courses and there are asynchronous distance learning schools. Synchronous learning is a bit more structured. You have class times, and you must attend those classes like you would a traditional school. The only difference is that you are attending class online, not in a physical classroom.? The learning and instruction takes place on a set schedule, and communication is through chat or instant messaging in real time. Asynchronous courses do not require simultaneous attendance with the professor and other classmates online. Most communication is through web chats, discussion boards and forums. In these asynchronous courses, you truly work at your own pace.

Making a Choice

There are a number of distance learning institutions and universities that offer a number of options to get the degree or certificate you are after. After you decide on the degree or subject you wish to pursue, you should choose an online school that fits your style of learning well and has a good reputation in your chosen field. You will also want to be sure to pick a school that is fully accredited so your degree is accepted by your potential employers as well as other universities and institutions should you want to go to another institution.

With a good education, and a degree in your chosen field, you can bolster your resume and get started on the career path of your choice with more upward mobility. Whether you are wanting to finish your masters, bachelors or doctorate degree, obtaining that higher educational degree will always be a positive.
